Morocco's Nador West Med container terminal will begin operations within days, the Royal Cabinet said on 28 October 2026. King Mohammed VI chaired a working session in Rabat reviewing progress on the port complex and the planned Tanger Med 3 extension. The chairman of TMSA's oversight board and the Nador West Med board of administration presented the status of both projects.

First terminal opens with 3.5 million TEU capacity#

The first container terminal at Nador West Med will offer an initial capacity of 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units when fully operational. A second terminal with 1.8 million TEU capacity is scheduled to enter service in April 2027. The two terminals represent 8 billion dirhams in private investment. The port complex has mobilised 54 billion dirhams in public and private investment to date, combining port infrastructure with industrial, logistical and energy platforms.

Energy terminals and industrial zone under development#

The Nador West Med complex includes a hydrocarbon terminal backed by storage capacity of up to 4 million cubic metres and a liquefied natural gas terminal capable of processing 5 billion cubic metres per year. A terminal for solid bulk and another for general cargo will complete the port's offering. The industrial zone is operational, hosting one active factory with three under construction. The complex is expected to create 14,000 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs in the short term.

Tanger Med 3 extension planned with 4.5 million TEU capacity#

The Tanger Med 3 extension project, presented to King Mohammed VI, will add capacity to the existing port complex. Located west of Tanger Med 2, the new port requires an investment of 8 billion dirhams and will include 1,200 metres of quays. The extension will add 4.5 million TEU per year in container capacity. The Royal Cabinet reviewed the project alongside the Nador West Med progress report during the 28 October session.

Connecting infrastructure supports port operations#

Development of connecting infrastructure includes the Selouane-Nador West Med railway link, the Guercif-Nador West Med highway and upgrades to the road network. The infrastructure is designed to serve surrounding territories and support the port complex's operations. The projects form part of Morocco's port system development, combining national growth with regional development through public investment and private capital mobilisation.
