Jordan calls for faster Aqaba port expansion after transit volumes surge
Prime Minister Jafar Hassan inspected port operations and urged acceleration of development projects following increase in regional transit trade.

Prime Minister Jafar Hassan inspected operations across the Aqaba port system and called for acceleration of expansion and development projects. Transit cargo volumes rose to 1.8 million tonnes, according to Ports Europe. Hassan made the call during a meeting at the Aqaba Company for the Management and Operation of Ports.
Port development and oil terminal capacity#
Hassan inspected the Aqaba Oil Port and highlighted the importance of development and expansion projects scheduled for completion over the next two years. The projects are intended to increase capacity and strengthen energy supply security. The expansion would reinforce Aqaba's position as a hub for supplying petroleum products to several neighbouring countries, Hassan said.
Government decisions to support port operations#
The government has taken decisions over the past year to keep pace with rapid expansion and development of the port system, Hassan said. The decisions have accelerated handling and customs clearance procedures, strengthened transit trade, and facilitated operations for importers and exporters. Storage yard capacity has been increased. The measures have supported supply and logistics chains, strategic stocks, and infrastructure development.
Railway project and inland port development#
Two weeks ago, the foundation stone was laid for the Aqaba–Al-Shidiya–Ma'an railway project. Hassan said port infrastructure and logistics services must continue to be developed to improve freight and storage operations and transit trade efficiency. The Aqaba–Ma'an inland port project is a strategic development project and a government priority, Hassan said.
Industrial support and safety standards#
The project to supply industrial clusters in Aqaba and Al-Quwayrah with natural gas was inaugurated around three months ago. The project would reduce costs for national industries, strengthen their competitiveness and support Jordanian exports, Hassan said. He said ports must adhere to the highest safety and security standards to strengthen confidence and enhance competitiveness.
